The 3 Series is one of the most available saloons second-hand and one of the models that define its segment. Its French fleet is shaped by business use: high mileages, mostly diesel, automatic gearboxes very widespread.
The Touring estate accounts for a large share of the offer and is often the model's best compromise.
Of the 362 used BMW Serie 3 listed right now: 62% are diesel. 60% have automatic transmission. Half are priced under €15,000.
The F30 generation, from 2012 to 2019, makes up the bulk of the offer. It combines proven engines, a well-regarded automatic gearbox and running costs still reasonable for the segment.
The G20 generation, from 2019, brings a more modern interior and complete driver aids, at a markedly higher purchase price.
On both generations, xDrive four-wheel drive is common and adds components that need servicing.
A complete main-dealer service history is the decisive criterion on this model, more than the mileage: these cars have often covered a lot of motorway kilometres, which is mechanically favourable provided the servicing was done.
On diesels, the oil-change history governs the life of the timing chain.
The automatic gearbox oil change at intervals should appear in the book.
On versions with adaptive suspension, rebuilding one component costs nothing like a conventional damper: test it during the drive.
A high-mileage driver who puts long-distance comfort and road behaviour first, with a premium servicing budget anticipated. The Touring if volume matters.
