The C-Class is Mercedes' family saloon and one of the most available premium models second-hand. As at its direct rivals, the French fleet is mostly diesel and very largely automatic, a legacy of business use.
The estate accounts for a large share of the offer and often negotiates better than the saloon.
Of the 291 used Mercedes-Benz Classe C listed right now: 59% are diesel. 78% have automatic transmission. Half are priced under €25,000.
The W205 generation, from 2014 to 2021, makes up the bulk of the offer. It is a clear step up in finish and comfort over its predecessor and remains reasonable to service for the segment.
The W206 generation, from 2021, brings the MBUX interface on a large vertical screen and electrification across the engine range.
The W204 generation is still within reach on tight budgets, with dated equipment but well-understood mechanicals.
Check the actual trim level: two C-Class cars of the same year can differ by several thousand euros depending on the original options. The equipment list is the basis for comparison.
On versions with adaptive or air suspension, a specific check is called for: a rebuild is expensive.
On recent diesels, the AdBlue history and the servicing of the emissions system should be checked.
Main-dealer history and remaining warranty weigh heavily in this segment, for reliability and resale alike.
A high-mileage driver who puts ride comfort and sound insulation first, with a premium servicing budget anticipated.
