The 308 is the best-represented model in the used Peugeot range, available as a hatchback and as an SW estate, which makes it one of the easiest compacts to find in the exact specification you want.
The SW estate deserves a mention of its own: at a contained length, it offers a load volume closer to a car from the class above.
Of the 440 used Peugeot 308 listed right now: 61% are diesel. 65% have manual transmission. Half are priced under €10,000.
The second generation, launched in 2013, makes up the bulk of the offer. It introduced the i-Cockpit driving position with its small steering wheel and high-set instruments, an ergonomic choice you have to try: it suits some drivers very well and others not at all.
The third generation, more recent, brings a modernised interior and plug-in hybrid versions.
On both, the SW estate accounts for a large share of listings and often negotiates better than the hatchback.
On PureTech petrol engines with a wet cambelt running in oil, keeping to the replacement intervals is a documented and well-known point on this engine. Insist on the invoice.
On BlueHDi diesels, particulate filter servicing and a history of sufficiently long journeys are decisive.
Test every function of the central touchscreen, including the climate control that depends on it in several trims: it is an expensive part out of warranty.
It is essential to try the i-Cockpit on the road before committing, checking that the wheel does not obscure the instruments in your driving position.
Regular family or touring use, with a clear preference for the SW estate if load volume matters.
