The Clio IV, built from 2012, now makes up the bulk of the offer. It introduced the current design language and the TCe and dCi engines you find everywhere.
The Clio V, more recent, brings a markedly better interior finish, a central screen and modern driver aids, with an E-Tech hybrid version turning up more and more.
The Clio III is still around on the smallest budgets. Mechanically simple, but it needs all the closer an inspection the older the car.
On the small-capacity TCe petrol engines, regular oil changes govern the engine's life: ask for the invoices rather than trusting a stamped book.
On dCi engines that have mainly been driven in town, check the particulate filter and the EGR valve, the two most common repairs on this model.
The clutch is the classic wear point on an urban Clio: the odometer often understates the real wear on a car doing short trips.
On an E-Tech hybrid, ask for a state-of-health diagnosis of the traction battery.
A first car, daily urban and suburban use, or a second car. It is also the model where price against condition is easiest to compare, precisely because nothing about it is scarce.
