The Megane occupies the compact segment at Renault, as a hatchback and as an Estate. It is one of the best-represented models on the market after the Clio.
The Estate accounts for a significant share of the offer and gives a load volume that makes it a serious alternative to a compact SUV, for less money and with lower consumption.
Of the 296 used Renault Megane listed right now: 67% are diesel. 73% have manual transmission. Half are priced under €10,000.
The Megane III, from 2008 to 2016, remains very affordable and mechanically well understood.
The Megane IV, from 2016, brings a bolder design, the vertical R-Link screen and a clear step up in finish.
The electric Megane E-Tech, more recent, is starting to appear second-hand and is a model in its own right rather than a variant.
On dCi engines, particulate filter and EGR valve servicing is the usual item; a history of short trips should make you cautious.
On TCe petrol engines, regular oil changes govern the engine's life.
On versions with the EDC dual-clutch gearbox, drive it in slow traffic before deciding.
On a Megane E-Tech, ask for a state-of-health diagnosis of the battery.
Regular family or touring use, with a preference for the Estate if load volume matters.
