The MPV was designed around one idea: maximise interior space for a given length. Tall cabin, raised seating, individual seats and often a third row – no other body style carries as many people as easily.
The segment has been widely abandoned in favour of the SUV, which makes it one of the best space-per-pound propositions on the used market today. An MPV a few years old often costs well below an equivalent seven-seat SUV.

A compact MPV, around 4.3 to 4.5 m, offers five genuinely roomy seats and sometimes two occasional jump seats. It stays manageable and suits a family of four.
A large MPV beyond 4.6 m offers seven real seats, usable by adults in the second row and by children – or adults on short trips – in the third. That is the format to choose if the third row is used regularly.
Watch the quoted boot volume: it almost always refers to the five-seat configuration. With the third row up it often falls below 200 litres.
This is what genuinely separates an MPV from a seven-seat SUV. Second-row seats are usually individual, sliding and separately reclining, letting you trade legroom against boot space per journey.
On many models the seats come out entirely or fold into the floor, freeing considerable load space. Whether that is possible, and how heavy the seats are to handle, varies a lot between models – test it in person.
Sliding rear doors, on part of the segment, are an underrated advantage in tight parking and for letting children out without catching the car alongside.
If you carry several children, seat count is not the only criterion: bench width and the number of Isofix points determine how many seats can sit side by side.
Individual second-row seats make fitting three child seats possible, which a conventional saloon bench rarely allows.
Check third-row access too: the tilting mechanism on the middle seats is used often and wears.
A loaded MPV is heavy. Entry-level engines that feel adequate empty can prove marginal with seven people and luggage, particularly on climbs or when overtaking.
Diesel is the majority on the used segment for that reason: low-down torque suits the weight carried, and families buying this kind of car generally cover distance.
Small-capacity petrol versions need a test drive loaded if you plan to travel full. Recent hybrids answer mixed use well.
A family MPV has carried children: upholstery, door trims and seat backs show it. That is cosmetic, and it is negotiable.
Sliding doors, especially powered ones, are a mechanical item in their own right. Check rails, rollers and mechanisms by opening and closing each side several times.
Finally, confirm all removable seats are actually present: a missing set is expensive to replace and does not always appear in the listing.
The MPV suits large families, blended households and anyone who regularly carries more than five people or bulky items – for less than a comparable SUV.
