The saloon was the default family car for a long time. The SUV has taken much of that market, but it keeps advantages its rival does not replicate: a low centre of gravity, favourable aerodynamics and, engine for engine, lower consumption.
On the used market that decline works in the buyer's favour. With demand having shifted to taller bodies, a well-equipped saloon often sells for less than a comparable SUV of the same age and mileage.

A three-box saloon has a boot separate from the cabin, closed by a lid. A two-box car, more common in Europe, opens on a hatch giving access to the whole rear volume.
The difference is practical. A hatch takes bulky items and lets you fold the seats for a continuous floor; a boot lid keeps the contents out of sight and isolates the cabin better from road noise.
Listings do not always draw the distinction. The number of doors on the spec sheet is the most reliable clue: five means a hatch, four means a lid.
The segment covers very different cars. A compact of around 4.3 m suits a couple or a family with one child and stays manageable in town.
Beyond 4.6 m, a family saloon offers rear space three adults can genuinely use and a boot that swallows a holiday for four. This is the format that has suffered most from SUV competition, and therefore where used price gaps are widest.
Executive cars beyond 4.9 m bring the best insulation and suspension. They depreciate steeply, which puts very well-equipped cars within reach – provided you accept running costs that remain those of the upper end of the market.
The saloon is the body style where diesel keeps most of its logic. Its aerodynamics favour it on the motorway, where the consumption gap against petrol widens. The break-even point is generally from around 20,000 km a year.
Below that, petrol makes the case: lower purchase price, simpler maintenance, no particulate filter sensitive to short trips. Small turbocharged engines deliver torque low in the rev range, which suits the size.
Non-plug-in hybrids have become a serious alternative on compacts and family saloons, particularly for mixed use. On the motorway the advantage fades: the combustion engine is then working continuously.
The low driving position and wide track give more settled road behaviour than a tall car, and less sensitivity to crosswinds. On a long journey, fatigue is generally lower.
Quoted boot volume is often comparable to an SUV of the same length, but the shape differs: long and low rather than tall and short. It takes suitcases better and bulky objects worse.
Getting into the back means stooping further, which matters for fitting a child seat daily or for passengers with reduced mobility.
On diesels, the EGR valve and particulate filter are the components to watch, especially where the history shows mainly urban use. A book showing regular long trips is a good sign.
On direct-injection petrol engines, the cleanliness of the inlet valves deserves attention beyond a certain mileage.
Executive cars with adaptive or air suspension need a specific check: replacing one component costs nothing like a conventional damper.
The saloon suits drivers covering regular distances on road and motorway who value ride comfort and consumption over ride height.
