The segment stays narrow in Europe, which makes used supply less plentiful than other body styles – but also steadier in value, demand coming mainly from businesses and from serious leisure users.

A single cab gives two seats and the longest bed. It is the most commercial configuration and the least versatile day to day.
An extended cab adds space behind the front seats, useful for keeping kit under cover, with occasional jump seats not suited to regular use.
A double cab, the most common used, offers four doors and five genuinely usable seats at the cost of a shorter bed. That is the compromise chosen by people who also use the vehicle with a family.
A pick-up generally offers a higher payload than an SUV, often around a tonne depending on the model, and a high towing capacity. Both figures appear on the registration document and in the vehicle's paperwork.
Adding a hard top, bed cover or fit-out reduces the available payload accordingly. For towing, the braked weight depends on the engine and transmission.
An open bed means the load must be protected and secured. A bed liner, tonneau cover or extra lashing points change real-world use considerably.
Most pick-ups have selectable four-wheel drive with a low range, built for traction rather than for the road. On grippy surfaces four-wheel drive should not be left engaged.
Unladen, the rear axle carries little weight, which makes the back skittish on poor surfaces and reduces grip on slippery roads. Behaviour changes noticeably once the bed is loaded.
The size, often over 5 metres, and a large turning circle complicate town parking. Height also restricts access to some car parks.
Diesel is almost universal on the used segment. Low-down torque is essential for pulling away loaded, towing and off-road work, and range matters on a vehicle often used far from filling stations.
As on any recent diesel, the emissions equipment needs journeys long enough to work properly. A pick-up used exclusively for short trips deserves a careful look at the particulate filter.
A pick-up that has genuinely worked carries structural marks, not just cosmetic ones. Examine the chassis, the rails and the bed mountings, particularly on a vehicle used near the coast or on salted roads.
On an example used off-road, check underbody protection, bushes, driveshaft gaiters and the state of the transfer case.
Test the transmission fully: engaging four-wheel drive, selecting low range, locking the differential where fitted. A drive is enough to reveal a mechanism seized through disuse.
A pick-up suits people who combine carrying loads, towing regularly and reaching difficult ground. For purely road or urban use, an SUV or an estate answers better, with more moderate consumption and size.
