Used electric cars have become a genuine market rather than a curiosity, with enough supply on city cars and compact SUVs to make comparison possible.
One thing decides an electric purchase and it is not mileage: the state of health of the traction battery. Everything else follows from it.

A battery loses capacity over time and use, and the rate varies enormously with how the car has been charged and the climate it has lived in. Two identical cars with identical mileage can differ materially.
Ask for a state-of-health diagnostic. It is a straightforward test and it is the single most useful thing you can obtain before buying.
Check the battery warranty separately from the general vehicle warranty: it usually runs longer and carries a capacity threshold below which it applies. Get those terms in writing.
On some older cars the battery was leased rather than sold with the vehicle. That changes the real cost completely and must be established first.
Quoted range is measured under standard conditions. Actual range depends heavily on speed and temperature: a winter motorway journey is the worst case and can fall well below the figure.
Urban and suburban driving is the opposite: regenerative braking recovers energy at every slowdown, and real range often exceeds expectations.
The practical question is therefore not the headline figure but whether your regular journeys fit comfortably inside it in winter.
Home or workplace charging changes the economics entirely. Without it, an electric car depends on public charging, which is more expensive and less predictable.
Check which charging standards and what maximum rate the car supports – these vary between generations and determine how long a motorway stop takes.
Fewer moving parts means less routine servicing: no oil changes, no clutch, no exhaust. Brakes typically last longer thanks to regenerative braking, which can conversely allow discs to corrode on a little-used car – worth checking.
Tyres wear faster than on an equivalent combustion car because of the weight and instant torque.
Electric cars are also the best placed against low-emission zones, whose restrictions continue to tighten.
An electric car suits predictable daily journeys with reliable access to charging. Without home or workplace charging, the case is much weaker.
